Multiple vulnerabilities have been discovered in Adobe Products, the most severe of which could allow for arbitrary code execution.

  • Acrobat and Reader is a family of application software and Web services mainly used to create, view, and edit PDF documents.
  • Connect is a suite of software for remote training, web conferencing, presentation, and desktop sharing.
  • Adobe Reader Mobile is a mobile app used for viewing, editing, and sharing PDF’s.
  • Adobe Ops-CLI is a python wrapper for Terraform, Ansible and SSH for cloud automation.
  • Adobe Commerce and Magento Open Source are providers of cloud commerce innovation to merchants and brands across B2C and B2B industries.
  • Adobe Campaign Standard is the Adobe Experience Cloud solution for cross channel campaign management.

Successful exploitation of the most severe of these vulnerabilities could allow for arbitrary code execution. Depending on the privileges associated with the user, an attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than those who operate with administrative user rights.

THREAT INTELLIGENCE: There are currently no reports of these vulnerabilities being exploited in the wild.

SYSTEMS AFFECTED:

  • Adobe Acrobat DC 21.007.20095 and earlier versions for Windows.

TECHNICAL SUMMARY:

Multiple vulnerabilities have been discovered in Adobe Products, the most severe of which could allow for arbitrary code execution. Details of these vulnerabilities are as follows:
Adobe Acrobat and Reader

  • Use After Free, which could allow for Arbitrary code execution. (CVE-2021-40728)
  • Out-of-bounds Read, which could allow for Privilege escalation. (CVE-2021-40729)
  • Use After Free, which could allow for Privilege escalation. (CVE-2021-40730)
  • Out-of-bounds Write, which could allow for Arbitrary code execution. (CVE-2021-40731)

Adobe Connect

  • Deserialization of Untrusted Data, which could allow for Arbitrary code execution. (CVE-2021-40719)
  • Cross-site Scripting (Reflected XSS), which could allow for Arbitrary code execution. (CVE-2021-40721)

Adobe Reader Mobile

  • Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory (‘Path Traversal’), which could allow for Arbitrary code execution. (CVE-2021-40724)

Adobe Ops-CLI

  • Deserialization of Untrusted Data, which could allow for Arbitrary code execution. (CVE-2021-40720)

Adobe Commerce and Magento Open Source

  • Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF) which could allow for Security feature bypass. (CVE-2021-39864)

Adobe Campaign Standard

  • Cross-site Scripting (DOM-based XSS), which could allow for Arbitrary code execution. (CVE-2021-40744)

Successful exploitation of the most severe of these vulnerabilities could allow for arbitrary code execution. Depending on the privileges associated with the user an attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than those who operate with administrative user rights.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

We recommend the following actions be taken:

  • Install the updates provided by Adobe immediately after appropriate testing.
  • Run all software as a non-privileged user (one without administrative privileges) to diminish the effects of a successful attack.
  • Remind users not to visit un-trusted websites or follow links provided by unknown or un-trusted sources.
  • Inform and educate users regarding the threats posed by hypertext links contained in emails or attachments especially from un-trusted sources.
  • Apply the Principle of Least Privilege to all systems and services.
