Shooting Aboard Amtrak Train in Tucson – 3 injured, 1 dead

On Monday, October 4, 2021, at just after 8:00 am local time, multiple shots were fired on board Amtrak Train 2 – the Sunset Limited – in Tucson, Arizona. The train had departed Los Angeles, California, on Sunday, October 3, en route to New Orleans, Louisiana.

Amtrak crew members, from the lead locomotive, reported shots fired while the train remained stopped at the Tucson Amtrak Depot near Mile Post 984 of the Gila Subdivision in Tucson, Arizona. Tucson Police Department officers responded to the scene.

A video recorded at the station, played in news media coverage, depicts law enforcement officers, including a canine and handler, at the train when sounds of gunfire on board begin. The recording indicates that a dozen shots were fired. The image at the right includes a link to the reporting by KOLD-13 in Tucson; the video is played during this report.

The Amtrak train crew and passengers were on board the train when the shooting occurred. All were evacuated safely – with the 11-member crew and the 137 passengers fully accounted for, without any reported injuries.

Published accounts indicate that three law enforcement officers were shot and wounded in this incident – two special agents with the United States Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and one Tucson Police Department officer. One of the DEA agents has reportedly died as a result of wounds suffered.

Police reportedly shot and fatally wounded one suspected shooter. Information indicates a suspect is reportedly in custody. The scene is reported secured – with no further threat presented.
